As a Holistic Skin Therapist in Halifax, nothing signifies Winter more than dry, sore and irritated skin. Covering up with layers, central heating and chilly weather plays havoc on our bodies. As November is Healthy Skin Month I’m going to share some of my quick fixes and tips on how to look after the largest organ of the body.
Fresh & clean not squeaky clean
Everyone should wash/cleanse their faces at the end of every day. A client of mine, her Mum still uses soap and water to wash her face. Others have a 4-step routine (cleanse, tone, serum and moisturise) to end their day with. Whatever you do, something is better than nothing.
My number 1 tip for cleansing is that you use a cleanser that works with your skin, not against it. Gone are the days of harsh skin-stripping astringent solutions. Now we use balms and lotions to remove the makeup and pollution from our skin, which soothes and cleanses. Let’s not strip the skin of its natural oils. This can make the skin ‘freak out’ and over produce oil or become stressed with outbreaks and dryness.
For winter, let’s think soothing and nourishing and not harsh scrubs and skin stripping solutions.
I love this Pinks Boutique Deep Cleansing Melt.
Infused with organic Lemongrass and restorative Mandarin, anti-oxidants & natural vitamin E to promote cell rejuvenation aimed at oily skin. Visibly softens and conditions the skin, never leaving it feeling tight and dry.
Let’s keep it nourished
Whatever your skin type, a daily moisturiser will help keep your skin in tip-top condition whatever the time of year. A nourishing cream will be helpful if you are dry (dehydrated which feels tight). If you are oily, something that will work with the natural oils on the skin will be more helpful.
If you are flaky dry (not tight), then look at using a gentle exfoliant once a week to help remove the dead skin cells a little quicker. Pinks Boutiques Bamboo & Oatmeal Facial polish is gentle enough for sensitive skin and won’t dry the skin either. Then pop a moisturiser on top, which will help the skin feel smooth and peachy!
SPF is not just for Summer
Applying a daily SPF will protect the skin from harmful UV rays and premature aging too.
If you are using a retinol or skin care product with it included, please do ensure you use an SPF, as your skin will need even more protection.
What about the neck down?
Don’t forget about the rest of your body!
Always easy to forget when we’re wrapped up in our fave jumpers, but exfoliating your body once a week can help keep skin smooth and allow moistursers to absorb better.
My fave is the Lemongrass Sugar Scrub by Pinks Boutique! Followed by a lovely body oil or nourishing body moisturiser making your skin feel soft and smooth.
Relaxation for healthy skin
Stress is a common cause for skin conditions, so be sure to take some time for you when you can. If you have Rosacea, stress, diet and the elements can all be triggers, so be mindful of what you eat/drink. Sometimes keeping a diary helps to manage symptoms too.
